Playscript for “Do Ask Do Tell” movie and slide show

Note: Because of a Microsoft software glitch (having to do with table entries in Word converted to HTML), the hyperlinks starting about half way thru  the file were one or two files "behind" and there are extraneous links (using the "span" subcommand), from about 7/11 to 7.124. I repaired this on 7/24/2006 by deleting extraneous href links.

7/25  Most links should work; I could have missed a few.

The purpose of this sequence of pictures and clips is to suggest what an indie documentary film like “Do Ask Do Tell” could “look” like. Of course, some of the images are not of the best quality and would be re-taken if used. This is what I can do on a “zero budget.” With $$$ it could be much more polished. (Visit my movie reviews at http://www.doaskdotell.com/movies )  Here is a discussion of a practical way to organize this material on a DVD or VD. For information about the DVD that I have made now, see filmstatus.

Most of the video clips are unedited. The intention is to sketch out content and what it would look like. With sufficient resources, scenes would be reshot professionally in high definition or some suitable technology. I have several scripts to develop this material, and not all of them are shown publicly (on this site).

The content of this file corresponds more or less to a film with a PG-13 rating. There are no sexually explicit pictures or images, but some of the audio discussion is about mature subjects, suitable essentially in high school.  Here, I mention my blog: http://billboushka.blogspot.com  http://billretires.blogspot.com http://billsinternetsafety.blogspot.com/

Here are some terms:

Applicability date:  The approximate date in history that the image refers to. The entries will be in approximate chronological sequence by this date (but not always!) – enough to make sense!

Content date: The time that the actual image content was originally taken or created

Photograph date: The date that the image was photographed

MPG – movie; JPG – still; R – rephotographed    The MPG’s have not been edited, although some of them will be done soon.

A ‘*’ after MPG means higher definition (a larger file but shorter time); generally these are files from MN.

Musical signature and credit frame for DADT film (sketch)     Also, here is my home-taken headshot.

Or a thumbnail:

(Yes, I am 62 and the sunlight makes my face look like a mask from a horror movie, or at least a prop for a slasher film screenwriting contest.)

This was a home “computer” from the 1940s. next to another (Army) chess trophy.

Family lived in Buckingham in Arlington until 1949 (then heavily segregated; now "re-segregated" by immigration and home-ownership economics; some of area being turned into condos)

My theory is that angels (not the Anaheim baseball kind) live forever, do what they want except make babies; We all know that “spam” is a pun (remember the movie “Sophie’s Choice”); The function on the TI 84 graphing calculator is y = 1/x.  Think of “spam” volume as represented by x, then take the derivative of its natural logarithm and you get 1/x, what is graphed. That is, passive internet advertising is the “derivative” of spam. Could that matter in court?  Ha ha, mathematics matters in real life.  I don’t have a slide rule (remember “slide rule accuracy” on physics and chemistry tests in the pre-calculator age); look at this site: http://www.sliderules.clara.net/ .

Since the mid 1990s, of course, we have lived with an additional dimension, as google can make anyone a celebrity.

Note the change in technology from the phonograph record to the CD

The workshop is mostly 50s technology, with a few modern items. I used it for science fair projects.

“Pumpkins are orange”—so I was scolded in a private kindergarten when I colored them as red, which I liked better as a kid;

I attended Woodlawn Elementary (grades 1-6) in Arlington VA 1949-1955; 1st and 2nd grades were in the front windowed rooms. Today the building is a hospice. Swanson Junior High School, which I attended 1955-1958 is today Swanson Middle School. I remember those dreaded algebra tests and “classworks” (factoring, long division, word problems) on the second floor near the end of the building. Arlington Hospital had a two-story colonial architecture of a community hospital until the 1990s, when buyouts and corporate mergers led to all the new high rise construction in a heavily historic (with Civil War remnants) residential area of Arlington. (Ponder the high cost of health care!) The Health Dept is still a 40s building in the wartime style that the hospital had been known for; nearby is the Halls Hill Wall, whatever is left of it from the days of segregation a few decades ago.  Kenmore Middle School has a new building (and a vacant field for the old one); had a neighborhood and Internet safety event 2/10/2008

Voice of Music

This was a 1951 Kimball console piano in the living room; I was called “a boy who plays.” Crosshands was a big deal.

I got my first stereo in fall 1962, a VM that tracked at 6 grams. I replaced the 78-stylus with a 1 mil stylus to preserve the mono records when tracking heavy, many of them badly worn in inner grooves (especially with piano) by an older RCA Victor “record player” where we used sapphire needles!  How things have changed!

The First Baptist Church of the City of Washington DC, (16th and O Sts NW, less than 1 mile from the White House) church of presidents. This sanctuary opened on Christmas Day 1955. I was baptized there with my mother in January 1956. The Church is affiliated with both Baptist conventions, so it has tended to be politically moderate to liberal, although the members vary enormously. President Jimmy Carter taught Sunday School there in 1977, when I attended (the divorce parable).

FBC members met in the Jewish Community Center, 3 blocks north, while the new sanctuary was being constructed in 1955; President Clinton attended both FBC and Foundry Methodist in 1993 during the debate on lifting the military gay ban.; Calvary Baptist is downtown and has a new steeple
