Reasonable Interview Questions for “Conflict of Interest”

Assume a scenario where a candidate seeks a technical position with no management responsibilities, but informs the employer that he or she also seeks outside media opportunities in film, television, publishing, or web.

This might be more sensitive in a situation where the candidate will be sent by the hiring company or “preferred provider” to clients for specific projects.

While I hope that such a candidate would not be excluded, the following questions should be asked to manage the possibility of conflict of interest.

· Are you “job ready” for the specific position posted? Do you have the hands-on skills without a long learning curve or extensive formal training? Are you willing to take a written test?  (Problem tests are preferred to multiple choice tests.)

· Will you respect confidentiality and “business use only” rules at work in a usual and customary manner? (Show the specific Internet and computer use policies, and confidentiality policies.) Will you agree not to mention or promote your personal interests at work or around clients? (This would include religious materials.)

· Do you have any significant business interests (including moonlighting employment) in a competitor or supplier of ours? Can you travel or work overtime for this position as required?  Will this position take priority over any other business interests as your major source of employment income?  If another opportunity appears for you, will you agree to complete the project to which we assign you for our client?

· Is any of your publishing writing or publicly available material controversial? If it is controversial, is it so because of intellectually thorough exposition (this is usually all right) or, instead, because it contains material that a reasonable person (including a customer or client finding the material) would find patently offensive? (This would include pornography, promotion of violence, and hate speech – and this is not all right.)
